52 Ancestors: #39 Mary Bianchi Pieri (Tombstone Tuesday)

Posted by: Eileen A. Souza

According to her baptismal record, Mary Bianchi was born on 5 July 1894 in Hazleton, Luzerne County (Co.), Pennsylvania (Pa.). The 1900 US census has her birth listed as Jul 1892. She was the daughter of Bonaventura and Mary (Bunt) Bianchi and she is my great aunt.

Mary’s siblings were Peter Bianchi, Christine Theresa (Bianchi) Concini, Henry Bianchi, Violet Josephine (Bianchi) Bridi, Leon Victor Bianchi, Anna (Bianchi) Furlani, Lucy (Bianchi) Bailoni, Charles Bianchi, Helen (Bianchi) Ficca, Margaret (Bianchi) Socoloski and Mildred Bianchi, who died at the age of five.  There were two other infants, unnamed that died.

Mary had her first child in 1908, prior to her marriage to John Pieri. Her son Victor Bianchi was raised by her mother, Mary (Bunt) Bianchi. For Victor’s story, see my earlier post, Who Is Victor Bianchi?

Mary married John Pieri on 12 December 1914 in Saint Peter Church in Mount Carmel, Northumberland Co., Pa. John was baptized in Santa Lucia, Cesera [Cesena?], Italy, according to the marriage register. A dispensation was granted for this wedding but the reason is not stated. Usually, this is done when one of the parties are not Catholic but as both were baptized, there must be another reason.

Their children were Edith H. (Pieri) Adams (1911 – 2003), Mildred Pieri (1915 – 2007), Frank Joseph Pieri (1917 – 1994), Dorothy M. Pieri (1919 – 1978), John Louis Pieri (1920 – 2006), Charles Pieri (1923 – 1984), and Louis Pieri (abt. 1928 – ?).

Mary is said to have died on 25 May 1958 in Atlas, Northumberland Co., Pa. She is buried in Saint Peter Cemetery located in Mount Carmel.  I am awaiting the next release of the Pennsylvania Death Certificates with bated breath to help me (hopefully) fill in some of the blanks here and confirm the death date.
